About Leona Dean
Leona Dean and her team of sensational dancers have taken South Africa by storm and have earned their place as one of the best modern Indian dancers in SA.
A practising Attorney, Leona Dean also holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree and is a Bharatha Natyam graduate. Leona and her spectacular dancers earned critical acclaim with their performance at the SAIFTA (South African India Film and Television Awards) and shared the stage with Bollywood stars Priyanka Chopra, Madhuri Dixit, John Abrahams, Karan Johar, Diya Mirza and Suniel Shetty. They recently created a stir with their “Flash Mob” at the Chatsworth Centre as part of the Heritage Day celebrations. The Bollywood style “Flash Mob” was one of the first of its kind and set off a new craze in Durban.
The Leona Dean Dance Academy, established in 1995, has grown to be one of the largest dance institutes. The academy specializes in Modern Indian dance, a dance style that has been made popular by the Indian Film Industry and which has worked its way into the hearts of all South Africans of Indian origin. Choreographer, Leona Dean, has taken Indian dance to a whole new level with her unique combination of drama, designer costumes and colourful props. Her contribution to the development of Indian dance and to the community earned her several awards for her outstanding achievement. She recently received an Indian Cinema Centenary Award for her contribution to the entertainment industry.
Her community work was recognized when she was awarded the Post/Impression Young Achiever award. She was later nominated as a finalist in the SAA Artist Award which was hosted in conjunction with the Playhouse Company. Her dance team scooped first position in both the Indian dance contest for DSTV Indian Bouquet and at the Chatsworth Youth Festival. The Leona Dean Dancers attained international recognition when the academy was selected to perform in Malaysia, for the annual Global Organization of People of Indian Origin conference. Leona Dean has choreographed and acted for popular playwrights Ronnie Govender and Essop Khan and enjoyed huge success with her shows featuring renowned stage personalities Muthu Murugan, Mervyn Pillay and Sagie Murugan. Her first break was her appearance on Ramesh Hassan video, “My wife saw me talk to Another Girl”, as the “other girl”. She made her a cameo appearance in a South African movie entitled “ I wish I was in Jail” Her sought-after team of dancers who toured both have revolutionized both South and North Indian dance and have become a force to be reckoned with.
Leona launched her own bodystocking called Skinz, Dare to Bare. The sheer, nude coloured bodystocking is one of its kind in South Africa and can be used under Dance costumes, Sarees, Indian outfits and almost anything. Skinz, Dare to Bare, gives you the confidence to wear revealing clothes without baring all!
